arc/sec LightSeries at Ars Electronica
arc/sec Lab
Project Description
The installations LightWing II, LightTank, LightScale II and Singularity are part of the research conducted at the arc/sec Lab for Cross Reality Architecture and Interactive Systems at the University of Auckland. Over the past three years the arc/sec team has presented and tested their developments in the inspiring and pulsating atmosphere of the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz. The arc/sec virtual gallery assembles the projects in the form of 1:1 models and documentary videos.
Installation: LightWing II (2019)
LightWing II creates a mysterious sensation of tactile data. In this interactive installation, a kinetic construction is augmented with stereoscopic 3D projections and spatial sound. Flexible carbon fibre rods hold a large transparent membrane in tension. A light touch sets the delicate wing-like structure into a rotational oscillation and enables the visitor to navigate through holographic spaces and responsive narratives.

Music: Kyung Ho Min
Support: Yan Li, Jacky Zheng, Zane Eggington
Installation: LightTank (2018
LightTank is a XR installation that augments an aluminium space frame structure with holographic line drawings. Using an anaglyph (red/cyan) stereo projection technique on transparent screens the haptic-digital construction merges with its surrounding and blurs the boundaries between tactile and virtual. LightTank creates a communal immersive experience with an intimate responsiveness to its audience.

Installation: LightScale II (2017)
LightScale II floats through a virtual ocean like a giant whale, materialising environments, events and user interactions. The installation generates a tactile data experience through 3D projections onto multi-layered mesh surfaces. The kinetic structure consists of a 20-metre long carbon construction, mounted asymmetrically on a single point support. The construction oscillates freely through space on the light touch of a visitor. A live-render program overlays the physical construction with projected place bound and interactive digital information.

Installation: SINGULARITY (2016/17)
SINGULARITY blends data, dance, music and architecture in an immersive performance. Large 3D holographic constructions appear interactively in space. The set-up combines a live render programme with motion-tracking cameras and triangulated projectors illuminating haze particles. Marked with tracking devices, three dancers become the experiential interface transforming virtual and physical movement into architectural space. Audience and performer experience an intermixing of techno sound, movement and data through transforming arcs of light.
